Understory — Privacy Policy

What Understory Is

Understory is a subconscious intelligence system. It captures dreams by voice, structures them into data, and detects patterns over time. It is not a medical or therapeutic tool.

What We Collect

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used only to provide the Understory service to you. We do not sell your data. We do not use it to train AI models. We do not share it with third parties except as described below.

AI Processing

Your voice is sent to OpenAI Whisper for transcription. We request that OpenAI does not retain your audio after processing. Your audio is deleted from our servers after transcription completes.

Your transcript is sent to Anthropic Claude for pattern extraction and analysis. We send only structured data — not raw transcripts — for weekly reports. Claude does not retain your content between requests.

Children's Profiles (Little Ones)

Little Ones profiles are created and managed entirely by a parent or guardian inside their own Understory account. Children do not have accounts, logins, or email addresses, and cannot use Understory independently.

Understory is designed for parents to capture dreams on behalf of their child. When a child speaks a dream aloud, the recording is handled the same way as every recording in Understory: it is transcribed, then the audio is deleted from our servers. We keep the words, not the voice.

Child profiles are deliberately simpler than adult profiles. They have no reflection prompts, no creative outputs, no intensity scores. A child's entries are kept fully separate from the parent's — nothing is shared between profiles.

As with everything in Understory: no advertising, nothing sold, no data shared with third parties beyond the AI processing described above. A parent can export or permanently delete a child's profile and all of its entries at any time. Deleting your account deletes all child profiles with it.

Purchases

Subscriptions and one-time purchases (Pro, Supporter, and the Unseen Mind PDF export) are handled entirely by Apple and RevenueCat. We never see or store your payment details — only whether your account currently has an active purchase, so the app knows what to unlock.

Analytics and Crash Reporting

We use PostHog to understand basic product usage — for example, whether someone viewed the upgrade screen or completed a purchase — and Sentry to catch app crashes and errors. Both are scoped deliberately: dream content, transcripts, and anything you've written or recorded is never included in an analytics event or a crash report. These tools see product usage and technical diagnostics only, never what's actually in your dreams. We don't use this data for advertising, and it isn't shared with anyone beyond PostHog and Sentry acting as our service providers.

Data Storage

Your transcripts, extracted symbols, roles, patterns, and analysis are stored securely in our database. Audio files are deleted after transcription. All data is stored with industry-standard security practices.

Your Rights

You can export all your data at any time from Settings.

You can delete any dream entry at any time.

You can delete your entire account and all associated data at any time from Settings. Deletion is permanent.

Children

Understory accounts can only be created by adults. Children cannot sign up or use Understory independently. The only child data Understory handles is dream content captured by a parent or guardian through a Little Ones profile, as described above, with the same protections: audio deleted after transcription, no advertising, and full parental control including permanent deletion.
